Beginning mid-2025, the European Union (EU) will implement a new requirement for travelers from visa-exempt countries, including U.S. citizens, to complete a European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) application before visiting any member country. This change will affect an estimated 1.2 billion travelers.
To apply, travelers will need a valid passport and travel documents that meet international standards. These documents must be valid for at least three months beyond the entry date and not more than ten years old. The processing time for ETIAS is generally expected to be quick, typically within minutes, although some applications may take longer if additional information is required. In some cases, applicants may be asked to attend an interview. In the event of a denial, an appeals process will be available.
Once approved, the ETIAS authorization will be valid for three years or until the passport expires, covering all EU member countries. However, admission is not guaranteed on every entry and will depend on meeting all entry requirements, as determined by border officials. U.S. citizens and other travelers from visa-exempt countries will still be allowed to stay in the EU for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
