President Donald Trump announced a significant expansion of U.S. immigration restrictions, implementing a travel ban on citizens from 12 countries and imposing partial entry restrictions on seven additional nations. The new measures are set to take effect on June 9, 2025.
Countries Affected:
- Full Travel Ban: Afghanistan, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, and Myanmar (referred to as Burma by the administration).
- Partial Entry Restrictions: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.
The administration cites national security concerns as the primary justification for these measures. President Trump referenced a recent attack in Boulder, Colorado, allegedly carried out by an Egyptian immigrant, as evidence of inadequate vetting processes. He emphasized the need to prevent similar incidents and warned that more countries could be added to the list if deemed security threats.
In a related move, the administration has revoked visas for international students intending to study at Harvard University. Harvard has condemned this action as retaliatory and a violation of First Amendment rights.
