Major UK Immigration Rule Change

Client Alert!

The UK Home Office has announced significant amendments to its immigration rules that will take effect on July 22, 2025. These changes will substantially impact employers who hold sponsor licenses and rely on foreign talent.

Key Changes for Employers

1. Increased Skill Level Requirements

  • Employers will only be able to sponsor roles at RQF Level 6 (graduate level) or above.
  • This is a sharp increase from the prior eligibility of RQF Level 3 (college-level).
  • Exemptions apply if the position is listed on the Immigration Salary List or the Temporary Shortage Occupation List. However, roles on the Temporary Shortage List will be phased out by 2026 or earlier, and workers in those roles cannot bring dependents to the UK.
  • Employers may still sponsor or extend RQF Level 3–5 roles before July 22, 2025.

2. Salary Threshold Increases

New salary minimums will apply across categories:

  • General Threshold: £41,700
  • New Entrants: £33,400
  • Skilled Workers: £31,300
  • Additionally, the “going rate” for specific occupations has increased and may exceed the general threshold in many cases.

Anticipated Future Changes

The UK government has also signaled the following upcoming reforms:

  • Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR):The qualifying period will increase from 5 years to 10 years.
  • English Language Requirements
  • Immigration Skills Charge
  • Family Policy Overhaul
